The municipality of Tarata is a district in the department of Cochabamba in the South American Andean state of Bolivia .
Location in the vicinity
The municipality of Tarata is one of four municipalities in the province of Esteban Arce . It borders the province of Capinota to the west, the Department of Potosí to the south, the municipality of Anzaldo to the southeast , the province of Germán Jordán to the east , and the municipality of Arbieto to the north .
The municipality Tarata has an area of 334 km², the central place is Tarata with 3,952 inhabitants in the eastern part of the municipality. (2001)

The municipality of Tarata is located in the transition area between the Andes mountain range of the Cordillera Central and the Bolivian lowlands.
