Echinopsis thelegonoides is a species of the genus Echinopsis in the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet thelegonoides is derived from the Greek word -oides for 'to resemble' and refers to the similarity of the species with Echinopsis thelegona .

description

Echinopsis thelegonoides has a shrubby growth with prostrate, upright, 3 to 6 meter long shoots . Down-lying shoot parts are very thick, upright shoot parts are up to 1 meter high and have a diameter of 5 to 8 centimeters. There are 15 to 16 low and blunt ribs that are somewhat notched but not tubercular. There is a distinct furrow between the small, circular areoles . Yellow to brownish, bristle-like thorns arise from the areoles and turn gray with age. The four central spines are 0.7 to 1.5 inches long. The eleven radial spines have a length of 0.5 to 0.7 centimeters.

The funnel-shaped, white, fragrant flowers appear to the side or near the shoot tips and open at night. They are 20 to 24 inches long. The spherical to ellipsoidal fruits have a diameter of 4 to 6 centimeters.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Echinopsis thelegonoides is widespread in the Argentine province of Jujuy on dry slopes at altitudes of 500 to 2000 meters.

The first description as Cereus thelegonoides by Carlos Luis Spegazzini was published in 1905. Heimo Friedrich and Gordon Douglas Rowley placed the species in 1974 in the genus Echinopsis .

Another nomenclature synonym is Trichocereus thelegonoides (Speg.) Britton Rose (1920). In addition, the following taxa were synonymous with the species: Trichocereus rubinghianus Backeb. (1963, nom. Inval. ICBN -Article 8.4) and Echinopsis rubinghiana (Backeb.) H. Friedrich & GDRowley (1974, nom. Inval. ICBN -Article 8.4).

In the Red List of Threatened Species of IUCN is the species as " Vulnerable (VU) ", d. H. listed as endangered.
