Echinopsis tubiflora is a species of the genus Echinopsis in the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet tubiflora is derived from the Latin words tubus for 'tube' and -florus for '-blütig'.

description

Echinopsis tubiflora grows individually or in groups. The spherical to short cylindrical, dark green shoots reach heights of up to 75 centimeters with diameters of 12 to 15 centimeters. There are eleven to twelve sharp-edged, wavy ribs that are deeply notched. The white to gray or black areoles on them are up to 2 centimeters apart. Yellowish thorns with a darker point arise from them . The three to four strong central spines are up to 3.5 centimeters long. The up to 20 unequal, protruding radial spines have a length of up to 2.5 centimeters.

The long funnel-shaped, white flowers open at night. They are up to 24 centimeters long and have a diameter of 10 centimeters.

Distribution and systematics

Echinopsis tubiflora is distributed in the Argentine provinces of Salta and Tucumán at altitudes of 500 to 1000 meters.

The first description as Cereus tubiflorus by Ludwig Georg Karl Pfeiffer was published in 1837. Karl Moritz Schumann placed the species in the genus Echinopsis in 1897 .

The name is mostly attributed to Albert Gottfried Dietrich . Echinopsis albispinosa K.Schum was included in the species as a synonym . (1903).
