Echinopsis vatteri is a species of the genus Echinopsis in the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet vatteri honors the Argentinean cactus lover and plant collector Ernesto Vatter (1900–1970).

description

Echinopsis vatteri grows shrubby , is branching and forms low cushions that are up to 50 centimeters high and can reach a diameter of 2 meters. The cylindrical, ascending, light green shoots reach a diameter of 5.5 to 8 centimeters. There are 14 to 16 blunt ribs . The whitish to brownish areoles on them are circular and 1 to 1.5 centimeters apart. From them arise yellowish, occasionally reddish, needle-like thorns that are bendable. The one to four central spines are 3.5 to 5 inches long. The ten radial spines have a length of 1.5 to 2 centimeters.

The funnel-shaped flowers are not fragrant. They are colored red, orange or yellow as well as in intermediate tones. The flowers are 10 to 14 centimeters long and up to 10 centimeters in diameter.

Distribution and systematics

Echinopsis vatteri is widespread in the Argentine province of La Rioja on stony mountains with Monte vegetation at altitudes of 1000 to 2000 meters.

The first description as Trichocereus vatteri by Roberto Kiesling was published in 1974. Gordon Douglas Rowley placed the species in the genus Echinopsis in 1979 .
