Echinopsis walteri is a species of the genus Echinopsis in the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet walteri honors the Austrian cactus specialist Walter Rausch (* 1928).
description
Echinopsis walteri usually forms groups. The spherical, green shoots reach diameters of up to 16 centimeters and the same height. There are about eleven, 1.5 to 2.5 centimeters wide ribs . The areoles on them are whitish. From them arise five to 15 - or more - bendable, needle-like, yellow thorns . They have a length of 1 to 2.5 centimeters.
The bell-shaped, yellow flowers are slightly fragrant. They appear from the youngest areoles near the apex of the shoots and are open during the day. The flowers are 7.5 to 9 inches long and up to 9 inches in diameter. The spherical, greenish yellow fruits reach a length of 1.7 to 2 centimeters and a diameter of 2 to 2.5 centimeters.
Distribution, systematics and endangerment
Echinopsis walteri is distributed in the Argentine province of Salta in the Quebrada de Escoipe at altitudes of 2000 to 2500 meters.
The first description as Lobivia walteri by Roberto Kiesling was published in 1976. Heimo Friedrich and Wolfgang Glätzle put the species in 1983 in the genus Echinopsis .
Other nomenclature synonyms are Lobivia huascha var. Walteri (R.Kiesling) Rausch (1987) and Trichocereus walteri (R.Kiesling) JGLambert (1998).
In the Red List of Threatened Species of IUCN is the species as " Critically Endangered (CR) ", d. H. listed as critically endangered.
