Echinostelium is the only genus inthe Echinosteliedae family . It includes at least 12 species that are considered to be the smallest slime molds .

features

With the exception of Echitostelium cribrarioides , the stalked sporangia are no larger than 50 micrometers , white, yellow, pink or light brown with a pale colorless stem. A columella is usually present, but then very briefly.

The peridium gradually dissolves, but regularly a more or less clearly pronounced collar remains around the stem. A scalp may be missing, if present, it arises from the tip of the columella and can be a single, only weakly branched thread up to a network.

The species of the genus mostly colonize the bark of living trees.

Systematics and research history

The family was first described in 1873 by Józef Thomasz Rostafińsky , the genus was also first described by Heinrich Anton de Bary , the type species is Echinostelium minutum .
