Eckehard Catholy

Eckehard Kurt Erich Catholy (born March 16, 1914 in Lissa ; † February 11, 2010 in Göttingen ) was a German specialist in German.

Scientific career

Catholy grew up in Potsdam. After graduating from high school in 1932, he studied at the Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg and at the Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität in Berlin until 1937 . After a few theater pieces and military service, he continued his studies in Göttingen in 1946. There he submitted his dissertation on Karl Philipp Moritz in 1950 , which was supervised by Klaus Ziegler. This was followed by his habilitation in Tübingen in 1956 for the carnival game of the late Middle Ages. In 1961 he moved from Tübingen to the Free University , initially as an associate professor , from 1964 as a full professor. Catholy followed a call to the University of Toronto in 1970, where he was responsible for German literature up to the 20th century until his retirement in 1985.
