Eckhard Altmann (born January 2, 1931 in Breslau ) is a retired German Protestant pastor . He was a member of the last people 's chamber in the GDR .

Life

Altmann was born in 1931 as the son of a pastor and a nurse in the Silesian town of Breslau. The family lived in the Lissa district of Wroclaw . In 1946 Altmann's family had to leave Silesia, which was now part of Poland, and settled in Kauzleben in what was then Saxony-Anhalt. In 1950 Altmann passed his Abitur and then studied theology at the Martin Luther University in Halle-Wittenberg . At this university he received his doctorate in theology in 1960 with the dissertation Speaking and Language in Contact Events in Sermons . In 1967 the habilitation followed with a paper on Christian Friedrich Richter . After studying theology, Altmann first worked as a pastor in Aschersleben and later in Theißen , from 1984 to 2005 he worked as a pastor in Halberstadt. In addition, he worked as a lecturer in church distance learning. Although he was a CDU member, Altmann saw himself only as a file in the 80s. It was only with the political change in the GDR that he saw opportunities for political shaping again with the CDU under Lothar de Maiziere . As a pastor he had already become a locally known personality as a companion of the Halberstadt Monday demonstrations. In the candidate list of the CDU district association of Magdeburg for the constituency of the same name, he came to the list and thus presented the CDU as a new, politically unused face as the top candidate in constituency 10. Ultimately, Altmann was one of a total of 21 theologians who were in the Volkskammer as members of the parliament moved in. In the People's Chamber he headed the Committee for Labor and Social Affairs. While the last People's Chamber was in existence, the People's Chamber's temporary examination committee to check the MPs for Stasi collaboration also raised suspicions against Altmann. Ultimately, an entry in the IM card index could be proven, but after inspection of the files there were no sufficient reasons to recommend a resignation. After the excursion into politics, Altmann returned to his church functions. In addition to his work as a pastor, he was chairman of the Diakonieverein from 1991 to 2008, and later the Diaconal Work of the Halberstadt Church District. Since 2003 he has also been a member of the Board of Trustees of the Harz Parsonage Foundation.

Altmann is married and has four children. In 2016 he published an autobiographical work about his childhood and youth.
