The Ecomobile is a cabin motorcycle from Peraves AG in Winterthur , which was built from 1984.

history

The Swiss Arnold Wagner received a patent in 1983 for the device to operate a support device for a single-track vehicle , the technical prerequisite for a cabin motorcycle, for which he also received a patent in 1984.

ECO

The first vehicles from the manufacturer Peraves , founded by Wagner , were launched in 1984 under the name "Oemil" (OEkoMobIL) or "Peraves Oemil" with the engine of the BMW R 100 and from production no. 5004 with the engine of the BMW K 100 . Since Peraves wanted to avoid confusion with the eco-movement, the “OEkoMobIL” was renamed “Ecomobile” for short “ECO” (internal name W18 K5). By 2005, 91 ECOs, powered by BMW K-type engines, had been produced.

MonoTracer

In 2006 the further development MonoTracer with the engine of the BMW K 1200 RS came onto the market; individual units with turbocharging and up to 190 hp are said to have reached a top speed of 315 km / h. From MonoTracer at Peraves 58 vehicles were built, of which 12 with electric drive, called MonoTracer MTE-150 . In 2010 the two prototypes of the MonoTracer-MTE (also called X-Tracer) won the X-Prize in the USA ($ 2.5 million (USD)) with by far the best efficiency of> 200 mpg / e consumption, corresponding to one Gasoline consumption of about 1.1  l100 km .

Since 2009, part of the vehicle production has been outsourced to the joint venture Bohema Mobil and Peraves CZ in Brno -Medlanky (Czech Republic). In October 2014 Peraves AG filed for bankruptcy ; the bankruptcy court in Uster dissolved the company due to insolvency.

The technology will continue to be offered from the Czech Republic (as of 2016). For trademark reasons, the vehicle was renamed from MonoTracer to Monoracer. At the end of 2016, the production of the gasoline-powered model was to be discontinued and from 2017 only a battery-electric version should be offered.

technology

In the 3.65 m long, 1.52 m high and 1.25 m wide MonoTracer with an unladen weight of 485 kg, the driver and front passenger sit one behind the other in a streamlined vehicle body, secured by three-point belts . This consists of aramid fiber- reinforced plastic with laminated steel pipe or cast aluminum reinforcement parts . There is a luggage compartment in the rear of the vehicle. The air resistance is low due to the streamlined shape with a drag coefficient c w of 0.19 and the small frontal area of ≈ 1 m². With the engine of the BMW K 1200 RS (85  kW ), a top speed of over 240 km / h is achieved. The fuel consumption is given at a constant 90 km / h with 3.6  l100 km and at 120 km / h with 4.4  l100 km .

In order to make the concept of the closed driver's cab possible, foldable support wheels are attached on both sides . These are lowered or raised by a switch on the handlebar. To prevent incorrect actuation such as pulling in while standing or at too low a speed or unintentional extension at high speeds, a <Fail-passive> computer system blocks such actuation errors depending on the speed and lateral acceleration. The driver is informed of possible raising or lowering by means of green light displays. If the supports, which need about 0.5 seconds to extend, are not extended at walking pace, a warning tone sounds. If the driver does not react by lowering, the vehicle will tip over on its side while stationary. The retracted support wheels cushion the fall softly and the vehicle is not damaged. In fast bends it is possible with a slope of 52 to 55 degrees to bring the retracted support wheels on the inside of the bend to the ground and to drive through the bend on three wheels.

The drive is purchased from BMW . It comes from the four-cylinder motorcycle series BMW K 100 (Ecomobile) and BMW K 1200 RS (MonoTracer) and develops between 90 and 130  hp . The five-speed motorcycle transmission has been modified so that the driver has four forward gears and one reverse gear available. The electric MTE vehicles are powered by Brusa or AC Propulsion MTE motors.

driving licence

In terms of approval, the Ecomobile / MonoTracer is treated like a motorcycle. To drive the ECO or the MonoTracer, a class A driver's license is required. Driving such a cabin motorcycle requires learning. In particular, it must be clear to the driver that other road users will later perceive him due to the small silhouette.
