The Eddleston Water is a river in the Scottish Borders Scottish Council Area .

course

The river has its source near the village of Leadburn near the northern boundary of the Scottish Borders. Its entire course essentially follows a southerly direction. Running through a sparsely populated region of the Scottish Borders, the eponymous Eddleston is the only larger settlement along its course until the Eddleston Water finally reaches the small town of Peebles . There the river flows into the Tweed after 17 km from the left .

Its course has been straightened in the past . This measure disrupted the habitat of resident animal species and led to floods in particular due to the increased flow velocity. For this reason, the possibility of renaturation of Eddleston Waters is being investigated. The project in collaboration with the University of Dundee is one of the first of its kind in Scotland.

Surroundings

Eddleston Water marks the western limit of the Moorfoot Hills . At Eddleston he separated the baronates Black Barony in the west and White Barony in the east. Starting south of Leadburn, the A703 ( Edinburgh – Peebles) follows the course of the river. The now dismantled line of the Peebles Railway followed the Eddleston Water also closely.

Along its course is the mansion of Cringletie House . With the Chapel Hill Bridge , the Eddleston Bridge and the Damdale Footbridge , three listed bridges span the river. Shortly before the confluence in Peebles, the A72 crosses Eddleston Water.
