Eddy C. Bertin

Eddy C. Bertin (born December 26, 1944 in Hamburg-Altona ; † May 19, 2018 ) was a Belgian author of horror , science fiction and youth literature .

Life

Bertin was the son of a Belgian father and a German mother. He was born in Germany in 1944, but his parents soon returned to Belgium. In the late 1960s, he began publishing horror stories and science fiction. At that time he was working as a bank clerk. In the following decades he wrote a large number of short stories - Reclam's science fiction guide speaks of 500 stories, at least 175 are known - which have also been translated into English, French and other languages. A relatively small number has also been translated into German.

Some of his horror stories can be attributed to the Cthulhu myth . One of them, Duisternis Is Mijn Naam (1978), is included in the anthology The Disciples of Cthulhu edited by Edward P. Berglund , translated into German as Cthulhu's Kinder . The English collection The Whispering Horror (2013) contains further stories from Bertin in the style of HP Lovecraft .

His science fiction work includes a circle of texts (stories, fictional factual texts and documents) in a future world developed by Bertin, in which people can move through space and time with the help of the invention of the membrane . As een Eenzame Bloedvogel , the first short story from this membrane universe, appeared in 1976. A large part of the texts from the membrane world appeared in three volumes : Eenzame Bloedvogel (1976), De Sluimerende Stranden van de Geest (1981) and Het Blinde Doofstomme Beest op de Kale Berg (1983).

In the mid-1980s, Bertin turned to youth literature. In the German-speaking world he is mainly known as the author of the horror book series for young people about Valentina Hellebel. So far (May 2018) seven novels have been published in the series, the first four of them in German translation by Arena-Verlag. In 1999, Magier des Evil also appeared there , which contains volumes 1 (Valentina and the thirteenth night) and 2 (Valentina and the blood-red rooms) .

In 1978 he was awarded the European Science Fiction Society prize for the Derrière le mur blanc collection .
