Noble Quinn

Edel Mary Quinn (born September 14, 1907 in Greenane near Kanturk , County Cork , † May 14, 1944 in Nairobi ) was an Irish member of the Legion of Mary and founder of numerous praesidia of the Legion in Africa.

Life

Her parents were Charles Quinn and Luise Burke Brown. She was originally supposed to be given the first name Adele , but due to a hearing defect it became Edel. Edel originally wanted to join a religious community , but her poor health prevented this. At the age of 20 she joined the Legion of Mary and worked in the slums of Dublin . In 1936 she went to East and Central Africa as the Legion's envoy , where she founded hundreds of legionary praesidia in what is now Tanzania , Kenya , Uganda , Malawi and Mauritius . She died of tuberculosis in Nairobi and was buried in the missionaries' cemetery there.

Her beatification process began in 1956. Pope John Paul II officially recognized her “heroic degree of virtue” on December 15, 1994, which is a preliminary stage for the beatification of a non- martyr .
