Edelbert Hörhammer

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Edelbert Hörhammer OSB (born May 14, 1935 in Zolling as Johannes Hörhammer ; † April 7, 2012 in Ettal ) was the 37th abbot of the Ettal Benedictine Abbey.

Life

After studying philosophy and theology in Rome, he worked for several years as a teacher at the Benedictine high school in Ettal and as a prefect (educator) in the boarding school. He first entered the Archabbey of Sankt Ottilien and received the religious name Edelbert there. He was ordained a priest in 1962 . At the age of only 37, the convent of the Upper Bavarian Abbey of Ettal elected him abbot on March 19, 1973. He held this office until May 27, 2005. His motto was: Serve the Lord with joy . During his administration, not only did the number of monastery members remain largely constant, the convent also rejuvenated. One of the most important decisions in his tenure was the founding of the Wechselburg Monastery in 1993.

His name is mentioned in an investigation report that was drawn up on behalf of the Archdiocese of Munich-Freising by the Munich lawyer Thomas Pfister in April 2010. The report deals with abuse and mental torture during his term in office between 1973 and 2005, in which Hörhammer is said to have been involved. Most of this abuse is statute-barred and therefore no longer relevant under criminal law.
