Barnabas Bögle OSB (born April 28, 1957 in Rottenbuch , Weilheim-Schongau district ) is the 38th abbot of the Benedictine Abbey of Ettal and of the Wechselburg monastery . He is Abbot President of the Bavarian Benedictine Congregation .

Life

Thomas Bögle attended the Ettal Abbey high school until his Abitur in 1977 and was also a pupil of the boarding school. In 1980 he entered the local monastery, where he took the religious name Barnabas, made his profession in 1981 , and then studied Catholic theology and philosophy in Würzburg , then classical philology in Regensburg. In 1985 he received the sacrament of ordination through Franz Schwarzenböck . As an abbot, he continues to work as a teacher of Latin, Catholic religion and archeology and as a prefect (educator) in the abbey boarding school. He was also the editor of the monastery magazine “Ettaler Mandl” for many years and was involved in various functions in the management of the monastery.

On May 27, 2005 Bögle was elected 38th Abbot of Ettal and gave himself the motto Praedicamus Christum Crucifixum ("We proclaim Christ as crucified"). The benediction gave him the Munich Archbishop Cardinal Friedrich Wetter on 11 July of the same year.

The General Chapter of the Bavarian Benedictine Congregation elected him on September 9, 2009 in Andechs as Abbot President of the Congregation.

On February 24, 2010, as a result of an abuse scandal at the monastery school , Bögle resigned his office with immediate effect due to an "urgent request" from the Archdiocese of Munich and Freising . After completing the visitation by the former Abbot Pius Engelbert von Gerleve , who was appointed as Apostolic Visitator , Cardinal Franc Rodé of the Congregation for Institutes of Consecrated Life and for Societies of Apostolic Life stated in July 2010 that the abbot could not be accused of any wrongdoing in connection with the abuse cases so that nothing stands in the way of a return to his office. On July 11, 2010 Bögle was re-elected by the convention . The Holy See immediately confirmed the choice.

Bögle has also been the Abbot Administrator of the Rohr monastery since 2016 .

coat of arms

The coat of arms of Abbot Barnabas shows the cross in the middle based on the motto Praedicamus Christum Crucifixum ("We proclaim Christ the crucified") from 1st Corinthians ( 1 Cor 1.23  EU ). The abbot is after the transfer of St. Benedict be understood as the Vicar of Christ in the monastery. The cross would also like to refer to the still young Ettal foundation in Wechselburg ( Saxony ). The basilica there is dedicated to the Holy Cross . The star at the foot of the cross commemorates the biblical Mary , who has been venerated in Ettal as the woman donor since 1330. Its symbol is the morning star , which is supposed to lead believers to Christ. The water wave initially refers to the Ammer river , which connects Ettal and Rottenbuch , the abbot's birthplace, but also indicates the sacrament of baptism.
