Eden Atwood

Eden Atwood (born January 11, 1969 in Memphis ) is an American jazz singer , actress and advocate for civil rights for intersex people.

Career

Atwood was born in Memphis, Tennessee. She is the daughter of Helen Guthrie Miller and Hubbard "Hub" Atwood, a composer and arranger for Frank Sinatra , Nat King Cole, and others. She is also the granddaughter of writer AB Guthrie, Jr. After their parents' divorce, she moved to Montana with her mother when she was five . She studied acting at the University of Montana in Missoula and music at the American Conservatory of Music in Chicago , worked as a model, actress and jazz singer in local clubs. In 1992 she released her debut album Today! at Southport Records. At the age of 23, Eden Atwood signed a recording deal with Concord Records . Shortly thereafter, the album No One Ever Tells You (1992, Concord Records) was released. She recorded the album There Again (1994, Concord Records) with Marian McPartland . A total of 13 music albums have been released by her so far.

Eden Atwood received her Masters of Social Work from Walla Walla University , College Place, Washington in December 2013 . She lives in Missoula, Montana.

Intersex

Eden Atwood was born with Androgen Insensitivity Syndrome (AIS). AIS is an intersex personality trait that occurs in about 1 in 20,000 people. In a person with complete AIS, the body's cells cannot respond to androgens, or “male” hormones. Eden discussed her life as a woman with AIS for the first time publicly with Bill Kohlhaase ( Finding Eden: A Singer's Journey ) in the liner notes for her 2002 album Waves: The Bossa Nova Session (2002, GrooveNote Records).
