Edersee-Grauwacke

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Edersee dam is built with around 300,000 m³ of Edersee-Grauwacke

The Edersee-Grauwacke , also called Hessian Grauwacke , is a natural stone that was quarried in quarries near Waldeck and Vöhl and was mined in Niederwerbe in the Waldeck-Frankenberg district in Hesse in 2010 as gravel and not for use as stone . This greywacke was of regional importance as a building block, for example the dam on the Edersee was built from this rock. The Edersee-Grauwacke, which belongs to the Kulmgrauwacken, originated in the Lower Carboniferous.

Rock description and mineral inventory

Edersee-Grauwacke is a dark gray, clayey-iron-bound rock that is very dense and homogeneous. Due to the weathering processes of the Hessian greywacke, rust-brown color is partially created on the rock surface. This color is caused by iron-containing binders that are contained in the rock, and the brown discoloration caused by this coat the otherwise gray to dark gray rock, especially on its joint surfaces . This coloring gives the stone an appealing effect when it is installed in the masonry.

The Edersee-Grauwacke consists of 53 percent rock fragments, 23 percent quartz , 14 percent feldspar and various accessories .

use

Remnants of quarry stone masonry from Edersee-Grauwacke on the Edersee

The Edersee-Grauwacke was most often built as natural stone masonry or when building a house very close to the quarries as a house base, door and window cladding and mostly in the form of Cyclops masonry . The most important building from Grauwacke is the 300,000 m³ Edersee dam wall, which was partially destroyed by an Allied bombing raid during the Second World War .

Today there is only one quarry in operation near Niederwerbe, which mines the greywacke as gravel or for packing.

Depending on the fracture location, the quality of this greywacke fluctuates when used as a stone. This greywacke is generally weather-resistant and only shows signs of sanding, sloughing and crumbling after a long time.
