Edgar Allan Poe , originally published with a typo as Edgar Allen Poe , is a biographical B / W silent film by the American director DW Griffith from 1909 about the American writer Edgar Allan Poe .

Content and story

The approximately seven-minute film was made for the 100th anniversary of Poe and provides in dramatized form seemingly scenes from his life is: It shows Poe's terminally ill wife Virginia and the resulting from the situation creation of his most famous poem The Raven ( The Raven ).

The couple live in the poorest conditions. In view of the suffering of his wife and her impending death, a raven appears to the desperate Poe, who perches on a bust of Pallas Athenes and thus inspires the writer to write a poem. After several attempts to sell the work, Poe eventually receives some money from a publisher. From this he bought food and a blanket for his wife, only to find on his return that she had already died. The film ends with Poe collapsing over the corpse.

Griffith's film is the first attempt at a cinematic biography of Poe and an early film by the still largely unknown director. In 1914, Griffith made The Avenging Conscience , another film based on various literary models from Poe, including The Tell-Tale Heart .
