Edgar Charles Smith

Edgar Charles Smith (born May 5, 1872 in Newport Pagnell , England, † March 13, 1955 ) was an English officer and marine engineer in the Royal Navy . He wrote several books on the history of steam shipping .

Life

Edgar Charles Smith was born in Newport Pagnell in 1872 to George Charles Hooper Smith and Mary Amstrong. He married Florence Sarah Funge on January 28, 1902 and they had five children together:

  • Eric Hooper Smith (born June 4, 1904)
  • Vivian Funge Smith (born August 21, 1905)
  • Donald Funge Smith (born March 6, 1907)
  • Alan Funge Smith (born February 24, 1909)
  • Florence Mary Smith (born August 3, 1911)

He became an engineer in the Royal Navy and served as Assistant Engineer under Commander David Beatty during the Boxer Rebellion on HMS Barfleur in 1900 . In 1908 he was an Engineer Lieutenant on the destroyer HMS Orwell under Captain Lieutenant Commander Edward O. Tudor. On April 20, 1913 he was promoted to Engineer Commander and served at various shipyards , including in Hong Kong and Devonport .
