Edgar Lehr (born June 30, 1969 ) is a German herpetologist and conservationist. His main research area is the biogeography of the neotropical herpetofauna .

Life

After completing his community service in a senior citizens' home, Edgar Lehr completed his degree in biology from 1990 to 1996 at the Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz . With the diploma thesis “ On the intraspecific variability of the rear Indian hinged turtle Cuora galbinifrons (Testudines: Emydidae) Bourret, 1939 ” he obtained his master’s degree in 1996 . In 2001 he received his doctorate as Dr. phil. nat., “magna cum laude” in zoology with the dissertationThe herpetofauna along the 10th parallel of Peru: species identification, taxonomy, ecological remarks and biogeographical relationships ”. From 2005 to 2006 he worked as a research assistant in the herpetology department at the Natural History Museum and Biodiversity Research Center at the University of Kansas . Since 2007 he has been curator for herpetology at the Senckenberg Natural History Collections in Dresden . In 2008 he completed his habilitation with the thesis " On the taxonomy, morphology and phylogeny of strabomantider anuras in Peru " at the University of Koblenz-Landau .

Noblella pygmaea was only discovered by Edgar Lehr in 2009

Since 1993 Edgar Lehr has been participating in herpetological expeditions that took him to Vietnam , Cambodia and Peru . In Peru he supports conservation projects for amphibians and in Laos , Vietnam and Cambodia he works to protect turtles. He also described several new species of toads and southern frogs from Peru, including Bufo chavin and several taxa of the genus Phrynopus . Together with the Swiss-Peruvian herpetologist Alessandro Catenazzi, Lehr discovered the Peruvian species Noblella pygmaea in 2009 , which is considered to be the smallest known taxon of the Andean frogs.
