Edgar Rubin

Edgar John Rubin (born September 6, 1886 in Copenhagen ; † May 3, 1951 in Holte / Rudersdal Kommune ) was a Danish psychologist and phenomenologist who became known for his research on figure-ground perception . The "Rubin cup" or the "Rubin vase" is named after him. In Germany, Rubin's work was mainly adapted from Gestalt theory .

Rubin studied in Copenhagen with Harald Høffding and Alfred Georg Ludvig Lehmann . He received his doctorate in 1915 with Synsoplevede Figurer. Studier i psykologisk Analyze (German translation appeared in 1921: visually perceived figures ). He then went to Germany, where he worked for GE Müller in Göttingen for three years . In 1922 he returned to Copenhagen, succeeded Lehmann as professor and director of the Psychological Laboratory at the University of Copenhagen and held these functions until his death in 1951. 1924–1935 Rubin was co-editor of the Zeitschrift für Psychologie . He was President of the Danish Association for Philosophy and Psychology and President of the 10th International Congress of Psychology.
