Edith Alice Unnerstad , b. Tötterman (born July 28, 1900 in Helsinki , Finland , † December 29, 1982 in Djursholm , Sweden ) was a Swedish writer who was best known for her children's books . Her books have been translated into numerous languages. However, the German editions have not been published since the 1980s.

Life

Unnerstad was born in Helsinki in 1900 as the daughter of the Finnish Swedes Axel and Ingeborg Tötterman. When her grandmother died in 1908, the family moved to her home in Åland . In 1910 the family moved to Södertälje in Sweden and to Stockholm in 1912 . After the First World War the family moved back to Åland. In 1924 she married the civil engineer Arvid B. Unnerstad, with whom she had a daughter named Lena.

According to her, the foundation stone for her career as a writer was laid in her childhood, when her sister was in hospital and 11-year-old Unnerstad wrote her a book. She wrote a new chapter every day and brought it to the hospital on her way to school. Three years later, a story and two poems by her were published in a magazine.

Despite these early beginnings and an ongoing desire to write books, her writing career only began after her daughter asked her for stories. Her first book Uffe reser jorden runt was published in 1932. She subsequently wrote numerous children's books, but also novels for adults and poetry. Some of her books have also been filmed as television series.

Her husband Arvid died in 1971. Edith Unnerstad died on December 29, 1982 in Djursholm, a suburb of Stockholm.
