Edmond Gréville Thonger (born June 20, 1906 in Nice , Alpes-Maritimes , France ; † May 26, 1966 there ) was a French film director and screenwriter who made over 30 international films between the 1930s and 1960s, including films such as Die silk noose , hot on bare stones , the sinister hands of Dr. Orlak or The Liars .

life and career

Edmond T. Gréville was born in 1906 as Edmond Gréville Thonger in the French city of Nice in the Alpes-Maritimes department . The son of Franco-British parents, his father was a Protestant pastor, he began his film career in 1927 as an actor with a supporting role in Abel Gance's monumental classic Napoléon . In 1930 he played the second leading male role alongside Albert Préjean in René Clair's romantic drama Under the Roofs of Paris . But since the work behind the camera impressed him more, he had already changed priorities in 1929 and earned his first spurs as assistant director with director Ewald André Dupont's crime drama Nachtwelt . In 1931 he started his career as a director with a series of short films, after 1932 Gréville concentrated mainly on the realization of feature films in France and Great Britain .

His first production, which was also shown in German cinemas, was the romantic drama Im Strom der Emotions from 1935. In the 1940s, films such as For a Love Night , The Silk Loop and The Dangerous Age were made . In 1951 Gréville shot the German production Im Banne der Madonna with Maria Holst in the lead role. In 1955 he directed the drama Port of Desire with Jean Gabin . In 1960 he directed the literary film adaptation of Dr. Orlak with Mel Ferrer and Christopher Lee in the lead roles. In 1963 he made his last film with the crime drama Die Schlange .

In the thirty-year film career, numerous film productions with prominent international cast have been made under Gréville's direction. He wrote around a dozen scripts and directed films in several countries and in a wide variety of film genres. When Edmond T. Gréville died on May 26, 1966 in his hometown of Nice, he was 59 years old.
