action

Sir Douglas calls his family and attorney to his stately palace; The reason for this is a change in his will , which he would like to announce. At the same time, a dangerous mentally ill man escapes from a nearby psychiatric hospital. Higgins and Lane are set on his trail. But the arrest of the psychopath turns out to be extremely difficult. Shortly afterwards, a mysterious hooded man is up to mischief in the castle. He terrifies Sir Wonderly so much that the old man goes into shock and falls into a coma . The will disappears at the same time and two sons are murdered. An inheritance dispute sparked among the relatives, although Sir Douglas Wonderly has not yet died. Sir John, the head of the New Scotland Yard homicide squad , steps in personally to solve the case with Higgins and Lane.

The servant of House Wonderly is also murdered; Higgins suspects that someone was trying to silence him. Mrs. Lane and Higgins find the escaped insane in secret passages of the castle. But this is not responsible for the murders, as previously suspected by Higgins and Lane. It turns out that the two policemen who Jonathan Ryder, the family lawyer, organized to protect the family are not real policemen, but professional killers. Later they too are killed by their employer, Ryder. Sir Douglas Wonderly, who had for a long time only faked the coma, then chases Ryder with a weapon on the bell tower, where he loses his balance and Wonderly suffers a second, fatal heart attack.
