action

The two bon vivants and advertising strategists Harry Berg and Jo Sommer hang out at Lake Constance to relax . While Jo tries to hook up with the young Grit Nolte from his hotel, Harry urgently needs a vacation from his ex-girlfriend Julischka, known as Jule. However, this appears suddenly and immediately takes Harry with her moods, whereupon he and Jo decide to buy a motorboat and flee out to Lake Constance.

The art dealer Georg Nolte meanwhile looking calm and balance while fishing, he is annoyed by his wife and stressed the fact is that his daughter Grit "with young men hanging around." His wife Carlotta tries to lure him away from the fishing pier and to public events. When he is able to escape her and is sitting in a pub with his fellow fisherman, he overhears Harry and Jo buying a boat. In order to join them, he offers himself to them as Smutje . The three men set sail, although Harry and Georg have not told their wives about it. Of course, Jo inaugurated his new flame and Georg even gave him a few tips on how to outsmart her father. Obviously, neither of them know that Jos "Hasen" is Georg's daughter. In the evening, while eating on her Marianne barge , Georg turns out to be an unskilled cook. While the men are preparing an omelette in the galley , they are singing the song Three Men in a Boat .

Meanwhile, Carlotta and Julischka are looking for their husbands. The two women meet by chance and go into pursuit. Grit accompanies the jealous women and is amused by them. When the police got wind of the search, the men decided to go down the Rhine , especially since Georg had to take part in an auction in Amsterdam in two weeks . Hardly on the Rhine, Georg almost steers the boat down the Rhine Falls from Schaffhausen . With a turning maneuver, Harry manages to prevent a catastrophe at the last moment. As a result, Georg is degraded to an ordinary seaman and the Marianne is loaded onto a train. When the three women reach the loading station, the freight train has just driven away, and Julischka manages to get jailed in the tumult. Carlotta and Grit travel on alone. Meanwhile the Marianne is sailing towards the next catastrophe. The new helmsman Jo steers the launch into the fairway of the freighter Bertha . Shortly after another courageous evasive maneuver by Harry, the helmsman of the Bertha falls overboard. After he is rescued, the three men discover that it is a woman named Betje. It sparks immediately between her and Harry.

In Königswinter the three decide to perform their song Three Men in a Boat with an orchestra. However, Carlotta and Grit have also arrived there. It quickly turns out that Georg's daughter and Jos “rabbit” are the same person. Georg temporarily tolerates the liaison . However, he does not want to see his wife and tells her over the phone to give up the pursuit and wait for him in Amsterdam. Meanwhile, Harry seems to be making progress with Betje too. They also agree to see you again in Amsterdam.

As soon as he arrives in Amsterdam, Harry disappears to meet Betje and does not come back overnight either. In the morning, Georg prepares for the auction where he wants to buy a “ Renoir ” and sell a “ Brueghel ”. Jo promises to take care of the ladies in the meantime and disappears. When Georg also wants to leave the boat, he is stopped by a policeman and made to moor the ship at another quay , since this is reserved for cargo ships.

At the same time, the auction started at the auction house, and Jo, Harry and Betje have already arrived. However, they are not familiar with the rule that bids are made with a show of hands. Unconsciously, they drive up the price for the “Brueghel” and Jo accidentally purchases the “Renoir” at a “ridiculous price”. When Georg learns from other participants on his arrival that the Renoir has been sold to an unknown young man, he is devastated. Only Harry is smart enough at the meeting to add one and one together. He sells Jo's error as a skilful maneuver, which in Georg's opinion immediately enhances it. On the last trip together, the women of the three runaways take control.

Background, production

The novel is not only mentioned in the opening credits ("with free use of the world-famous novel by Jerome K. Jerome"), but also by the three main characters during their first meeting with the full title Three men in one boat, not to mention the dogs called.

The pictures that Georg buys or sells in Amsterdam are Lady with Dog by Pierre-Auguste Renoir and The Peasant Dance by Pieter Brueghel the Elder . The Brueghel painting is called "A Little Peasant Piece" in the film.

The production manager of the film was the later film producer Heinz Willeg . In addition, the Tatort director and cameraman Kurt Junek was hired to swivel the camera . Willi A. Herrmann was responsible for the film construction . The film was shot in Austria , Germany , the Netherlands and Switzerland .

Filming began in June and ended in August 1961. The photos were taken on Lake Constance (including in the "Hotel Bad Schachen" and the adjacent "Lindenhofpark" in Bad Schachen , a district of Lindau as well as in Meersburg and Wasserburg ), and along the entire Rhine to Amsterdam . The scene of the boat loading was not shot in Stein am Rhein , as suggested in the film, but at the port of Romanshorn . The three protagonists can be seen here in front of the Church of St. John. The loading station and the boat crane were demolished in the course of the renovation of the Romanshorn station . The production company was the Wiener Mundus Film (Dr. Alfred Stöger) Vienna and the Kurt Ulrich Film GmbH. Berlin.

The film premiered in the Federal Republic of Germany on August 25, 1961. It was first shown on ARD on May 15, 1967.

Reviews

Georg Herzberg from Film-Echo did not consider the idea that they had decided on a musical swing around a prominent comedian trio to be so lucky, since the submission of the Englishman Jerome K. Jerome, which describes a trip on the Thames, is laid out differently. He also wondered why the pretty situation regarding the Rhine Falls had not been coped with in terms of editing. Herzberg ended his criticism with the words:

“This film is aimed at a specific audience whose tastes it wanted to meet. In any case, there was very warm applause at the Mainz 'Residenz' when Hans-Joachim Kulenkampff, Heinz Erhardt, Susanne Cramer and the director appeared on stage. "

- Georg Herzberg, Film-Echo No. 71/72 of September 9, 1961

"Just as the cyclists always do , this comedy is about not particularly original slapstick adventures of temporary 'bachelorette'."

“Oh, what a rascal he is again! Heinz Erhardt plays the aging family man who wants to do another real rascal and experience a men's trip. Next to him, the 'young' Kulenkampff and Giller seem rather conservative. The end is predictable, but the way there is entertaining. "

- Frank Ehrlacher, moviemaster.de

“Jerome's story of three dropouts is staged fairly quickly and provided with all the ingredients of the sixties entertainment film. Somehow life must have been nice and easy back then. "

- Heyne Film Lexicon, 1996

"A clothing-like comedy that cannot be recommended."
