Edmond Rostand
Edmond Eugène Alexis Rostand [ rɔ'stã ] (born April 1, 1868 in Marseille , † December 2, 1918 in Paris ) was a French playwright.
Life
Rostand came from a wealthy Provencal family. After completing his legal training, he devoted himself entirely to poetry. In 1890 he married Rosemonde Gérard, who was also a writer, and had two sons with her; however, he left her in 1915 for his last mistress, Mary Marquet .
Rostand was accepted into the Académie française in 1901 . In 1918 he succumbed to the Spanish flu, which was then rampant worldwide .
He is the father of the playwright Maurice Rostand (1891–1968) and the biologist and writer Jean Rostand , who was also a member of the Académie française.
In the feature film Curtain Up for Cyrano (2018), which is based on a play, he is portrayed by Thomas Solivérès .
Works
Rostand wrote neo-romantic verse dramas, a. a. The distant princess (1895), a troubadour tragedy written for Sarah Bernhardt . With his heroic comedy of the generous poet and daredevil Cyrano de Bergerac (1897) he created a role coveted by actors and a real popular play in his country that was successful far beyond the borders of France. In 1899 he wrote The Woman of Samaria , 1900 The Young Eagle , 1910 Chantecler . One of the few works from the estate is don Juan's Last Night .
