Edmond de la Fontaine
Edmond de la Fontaine (* July 24, 1823 in Luxembourg City , Place Guillaume II ; † June 24, 1891 in Vianden ), called Dicks , was a lawyer and author of comedies , poems and songs in Luxembourgish .
Life
Lucien Irvin Edmond de la Fontaine was the third son of Gaspard Théodore Ignace de la Fontaine and Joséphine Francq. In 1841 his father was appointed governor of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg by King Wilhelm II of the Netherlands .
After graduating from high school in 1844, la Fontaine studied in Liège and Heidelberg until 1847 . In 1850 he was sworn in as a lawyer. In 1852 he was appointed second supplementary judge at the Court of Justice in Luxembourg, and the following year as first supplementary judge.
La Fontaine was mayor of Stadtbredimus from 1867 to 1870 . He lived in the castle there with his wife Elise Dutreux (1828–1907), whom he married in 1858. The couple had two sons, Alfred and Adrien, and a daughter, Eugénie.
On January 5, 1881, he became justice of the peace of the canton of Vianden . From then on he lived in Vianden until his death. Two years after his death, his remains were transferred to Stadtbredimus, where he is buried in the family grave. After the death of Michel Lentz , another well-known Luxembourg writer and poet, the Dicks Lentz Monument was erected next to the Place d'Armes in Luxembourg City in 1903 in honor of the two personalities .
Edmond de la Fontaine was the brother of the botanist Léon de la Fontaine and the zoologist Alphonse de la Fontaine .
Streets are named after him throughout the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg.
