Edmund Ignatius Hogan ( Irish Éamonn Ó hÓgáin , born January 25, 1831 in Cork , † November 26, 1917 ) was an Irish historian , linguist , Roman Catholic theologian , priest and Jesuit from the Irish Renaissance . As a member of the Royal Irish Academy and professor at University College Dublin , he was the author of numerous books on Irish history and language and also translated several works of Irish literature from Gaelic into English .
