Edo Saiya was born in Cologne under the real name Timo Bethke. Musically he was mainly influenced by American rap and emo post rock, as well as soul and jazz to a certain extent . At first he played in rock bands before he appeared publicly as a battle rapper : “At some point I was at the point that I thought: I don't just want to rap to rap, I want to say something. I have higher demands on myself. ”He borrowed the pseudonym Edo Saiya from Japanese and based himself on current influences from cloud rap .

From the beginning of 2018, Edo Saiya regularly released singles and tapes. After his debut EP Somnia was self-distributed in April, his first single Besser followed a few weeks later . RecordJet then took over the rapper's publications. The album Azur was released on the platform in summer 2018 , on which Negatiiv OG , Kid Cairo and Felikz are represented as guests. The latter was followed by the Collabo EP Flight of Fancy at the beginning of October . Saiya closed the year with the album Broken Displays Broken Promises , which has more prominent support from Sierra Kidd and Yin Kalle.

In 2019, the rapper first released the EPs Akt01 and The Cold Hit Hard . The album This Was Home followed in May , for which songs with Felikz, BLAMEPEAK, Young Richie Rich, Negatiiv OG and Jalle were created. In August Jan Rode, the former founder of TubeOne Networks , took over the management of Edo Saiya with his company Kein Plan . Distant was released a month later . Together with Lil Lano , he recorded the single Sag Wieso , which the AnanasSquad label released in January 2020. At number 51, a publication by Edo Saiya was able to position itself in the charts for the first time. His solo tour planned under the title Brille Kaputt Tour in May fell victim to the COVID-19 pandemic, as did his appearance at Splash! -Festivals.

reception

The online magazine Diffus dealt with the musician in spring 2019. Edo Saiya reflected in his songs "his lifestyle between nights spent, drug consumption and honest reflection on his own personality", making him one of the "most promising German-speaking artists". Musically, he uses "progressive sounds full of driving drums or pressing 808 basses". He mixes this sound "with genre-breaking elements from rock, indie, RnB and alternative." While the magazine describes The Cold Hit Hard as a "dark work", This Was Home sounds "overall cheerful, almost summery".

According to Jakob Wihgrab, “contemporary 808 beats meet emo attitude” in Edo Saiya. In his contribution to Puls , the youth channel of the Bavarian Radio , he criticized the “drug pose”, but at the same time praised how the rapper reflected his “soul life”: “There are the highs, the parties, the drugs, but also the lows that brings with it: self-doubt, lovesickness and phases of depression. ”The song Kids exemplifies the“ wasted youth feeling between excess and pressure to succeed, permanent high and depressed mood ”. While Saiya refers to rappers like Waka Flocka Flame , Wihgrab sees parallels with Lil Xan and Lil Peep . The influence of US trap and cloud rap is "unmistakable".
