Edson [ ˈɛdsən ] is a small town in Alberta , Canada , about 200 km west of Edmonton . The town, which was called Heatherwood until 1911 , was named after Edson J. Chamberlain, who was vice chairman of the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway .
The village was originally important as a railway system on the route between Edmonton and Hinton . Edson is on Highway 16 (Yellowhead Route) , which was expanded in the 1950s and is now one of the busiest routes in Alberta. The local industry consists mainly of coal mining , natural gas extraction , forestry and the manufacture of products for the construction industry . Edson is located in a landscape of boreal forest , sandy hills and swamps .
