Edward of Savoy called the Liberal (* around 1273 ; † November 4, 1329 in Gentilly ) was the eldest son of Amadeus V and Count of Savoy for only six years .

Life

Eduard married on October 18, 1307 in the Château de Montbard Blanka, daughter of Duke Robert II of Burgundy. Their only daughter Johanna married Johann III in 1329 . , Duke of Brittany . Eduard was involved in several armed conflicts. He clashed with Hugo von Faucigny , who had built a castle on the Savoyard estate. Eduard besieged it and let it drag. Thereupon the Baron von Faucigny teamed up with his nephews Guigues von Viennois and Hugo von Geneva and besieged Edward's castle Alinges . This put the attackers to flight. Further attacks on both sides followed and finally Eduard was almost captured in a battle near Varey Castle in February 1325 , managed to escape to Pont-d'Ain and withdrew.

In 1326 a peasant revolt broke out in the Maurienne countryside near Arves, and in 1327 Eduard had to make concessions to the bishop and the peasants, so his income from these lands was temporarily halved. Eduard received the nickname of the Liberals through his indulgent politics in his countries, so he granted the communities greater freedom. He could not afford any internal conflicts because the armed conflict with the Dauphin continued and Savoy had to support the King of France. In 1328 Eduard accompanied Philip VI. to Flanders took part in the victorious battle of Montecassel . Then he and his opponent Guigues promised in Paris on his deathbed he widowed Queen Clementine to settle their dispute. However, Eduard died shortly afterwards on November 4th in Gentilly of an illness.
