Eduard Bähler (politician)

Eduard Bähler (born January 13, 1832 in Neuenegg , † January 24, 1910 in Biel ) was a Swiss doctor and politician (democratic movement).

Bähler worked as a doctor in Laupen from 1856 and in Biel from 1866 . He took part in the Sonderbund War and was a leader of the radicals. As a supporter of the democratic movement, he advocated the extension of popular rights in the 1860s. From 1868 he was a councilor in Biel, from 1869 to 1872 Biel's city president, from 1872 to 1879 Bernese grand councilor , from 1883 to 1884 member of the constitutional council, and from 1887 to 1908 national councilor of the radical democratic parliamentary group. Bähler affirmed the culture war policy of the Bern government and fought at the cantonal level against the separation of church and state . In the National Council (Commission for Health and Accident Insurance), Bähler campaigned for the expansion of democracy in the economic and social field. He was a member of the Helvetia student association and an honorary member of the Grütliverein .
