Eduard Backert (born April 2, 1874 in Rottmar ; † February 3, 1960 ) was a German trade unionist .

Life

Backert attended elementary school and was then trained as a brewer . From 1890 to 1892 he went on a roll across Germany. Then he did his military service. In 1892 he joined the Central Association of Brewers in Weida . From 1900 he was Gauleiter of the association in Thuringia and board member of the local health insurance fund in Gera . He also joined the SPD . From 1904 he headed the Prussian eastern provinces. In 1907 he became the second chairman of the Central Association of German Brewery Workers and Related Professions, and in 1914 Chairman of the Association of Brewery and Mill Workers and Related Professions . From 1919 he was therefore a member of the federal executive committee of the General German Trade Union Federation . When the Association of Brewery and Mill Workers and Allied Professions merged with other unions to form the Association of Food and Beverage Workers , he became their first and only chairman.

When the union was dissolved by the National Socialists in 1933, he was taken into protective custody as a precaution . Until then, he was a board member of the Bank of Workers, Employees and Civil Servants . After his release he lived until 1945 unmolested by the Sturmabteilung and the Gestapo in Zepernick , where he also stored the works of his unions and thus saved them through the Nazi era. After the Second World War he worked as an arbitrator and helped build the food-enjoyment-restaurants union , to which he left his private library.
