Hall pond in Rottmar

On the north-eastern outskirts of Rottmar there was one of a total of five brickworks around the city of Sonneberg around 1880, which owe their origin to the Sonnenberg fire and subsequent reconstruction from the middle of the 19th century. Another 50 mostly small or channel-like pits and mining fields were created during railway and road construction (for railway embankments) and for sand extraction (probably also special sands for glassworks). After the brickworks were closed, some of the deep pits, which had already been flooded by groundwater, became fish ponds, while the majority of the higher-lying mining fields were affected by reforestation or leveling.

On July 1, 1950, Rottmar was incorporated into Gefell. This community in turn was incorporated into Föritz on June 30, 1994. The municipality of Föritz was merged with two other municipalities to form the new municipality of Föritztal on July 6, 2018.

An industrial area has been created since the fall of the Wall .
