Eduard Gerlich (born February 3, 1836 in Odrau ( Austrian Silesia ), † October 14, 1904 in Zurich ) was a Silesian-Austrian railway builder.

Life

Eduard Gerlich studied at the Technical University in Vienna . After graduating with a good degree, he was also offered the opportunity to teach at the university. After two years, however, he switched to business and took a position at the Ministry of Railways. He was involved in numerous railway projects, such as the railway from Arad in today's Romania to Severin in Croatia or from Ried im Innkreis to Braunau or in the Czech Republic from Ostroměř via Jičín and Vrchlabí to Poříčí .

In 1875 he got the position of deputy chief engineer at the Gotthard Railway Company in Switzerland. Here he was primarily responsible for standards and contracts for the construction of the railway and the tunnel . After completion, he was a senior inspector for a short time. In Volume XVI of the magazine "Die Eisenbahn" from 1881, Gerlich described the construction of the Gotthard Railway .

In 1882 he and Karl Wilhelm Ritter succeeded Karl Culmann at the Swiss Federal Polytechnic for Engineering in Zurich. Until 1903 he mainly taught railway construction and operation.

Eduard Gerlich died on October 14, 1904 in Zurich. The house where he was born is unknown in Odry today.

In 1966, Gerlichgasse in Vienna- Donaustadt (22nd district) was named after him.
