Eduard Toda i Güell (born June 6, 1854 in Reus , † March 26, 1941 in Poblet ) was a Spanish diplomat and Egyptologist .

Life

Eduard Toda i Güell attended the Escuelas Pías de Reus , which he graduated from high school in 1869. He was friends with Antoni Gaudí since childhood .

Toda i Güell studied at the Complutense University of Madrid Law and entered 1873 in the foreign service. From 1876 to 1882 he was employed in consular posts in Macau , Hong Kong and, in 1882, Shanghai . He spent the years from 1882 to 1884 in Reus. On April 17, 1884, he came aboard the steamer Tanjore of the Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Company under Captain Briscoe to Egypt to receive the exequatur as consul general in Cairo .

From September 17, 1886 he was a full member of the Real Academia de Buenas Letras and a corresponding member of the Real Academia de la Historia , this he became at the suggestion of the academy members Eduarde Saavedra Moragas , Juan Facundo Riaño Montero and Víctor Balaguer Cirera . Together with his friend Antoni Gaudí and the Catalan surgeon Josep Ribera i Sans, he developed a plan to restore the monastery of Santa Maria de Poblet , which was carried out in 1920. In 1930 he became head of the monastery of Poblet and was from 1932 to 1940 editor and editor of the Boletín Arqueológico de la Real Sociedad Arqueológica Tarraconense .
