Eduardo Saavedra
Eduardo Saavedra y Moragas (born February 27, 1829 in Tarragona , † February 12, 1912 in Madrid ) was a Spanish civil engineer , architect , historian and archaeologist .
Saavedra studied from 1846 to 1851 at the engineering school in Madrid (Escuela de Ingenieros de Caminos) and was professor there from 1854 to 1862 and 1867 to 1870.
He wrote textbooks for civil engineers in Spain and also translated English books such as those by William Fairbairn and F. Michon (with extensive comments).
He examined the statics of masonry arches, also building on Yvon Villarceau . In 1857 he designed the tallest lighthouse in Spain (height 62 m) in Chipiona .
He had wide-ranging intellectual interests and was in the Royal Spanish Academies of History, of Science and of Language. In 1860 he discovered ruins of Numantia in the province of Soria and was engaged in the excavations. During road works he also discovered an old Roman road from El Burgo de Osma (Uxama Argaela) in this province . He was also an Arabist who studied Arabic culture in Spain.
