Edwar al-Charrat

Edwar al-Charrat (born March 16, 1926 in Alexandria , † December 1, 2015 in Cairo ) was an Egyptian writer .

Life

After completing a law degree, al-Charrat worked in various fields including banking, insurance and as a journalist. Right from the start, he was involved with Afro-Asian writers' organizations.

At the end of the 1940s he became politically active in the “National Movement” of Egypt, whereupon he had to spend two years under King Faruk in the Abukir and Tur concentration camps .

After his release from prison, he began working as a novelist in Cairo. He also wrote short stories and worked as a critic, translator and editor. His work comprises three volumes of short stories and around ten novels, only a few of which have been published in German.

In 1999 he received the Nagib Mahfuz Prize from the American University in Cairo; In 2004 al-Charrat was a guest of the Arab League at the Frankfurt Book Fair.
