Erika Engel-Wojahn

Erika Engel-Wojahn (born September 21, 1911 in Berlin ; † July 6, 2004 in Potsdam ) was a German children's book author, poet and illustrator. She wrote over 250 choral songs and cantatas.

Erika Engel wrote the lyrics of the two well-known German Christmas carols Are the lights lit and anticipation, most beautiful joy .

Life

Born in Berlin, she lived in Bergholz-Rehbrücke from 1945 to 1952 and in Potsdam until her death. She was a press illustrator and worked as an occasional poet for various newspapers and magazines, e.g. B. the Berliner Zeitung , the Neue Berliner Illustrierte , the Eulenspiegel and the Märkische Volksstimme . Your texts were u. a. Set to music by Hans Sandig , Hans Naumilkat and Leo Spies . After an accident, she lived in the “ Käthe Kollwitz ” senior citizens' home in Potsdam from 1984 . On August 3, 2004, her urn was buried in the cemetery in Bergholz-Rehbrücke.
