Hans Sandig (born June 21, 1914 in Leipzig ; † September 23, 1989 ) was a German choir director , conductor , composer and arranger .

Life

Sandig studied musicology, psychology and composition and received his doctorate in 1938. In 1948 he took over the position of music advisor at the Mitteldeutscher Rundfunk. In the same year he founded the Rundfunk-Kinderchor Leipzig (now the MDR Children's Choir ), which he directed until his death and to which he dedicated the Christmas carol Are the Lights Lit , which goes back to the poem Christmas Joy by Erika Engel-Wojahn . This Christmas carol is the motto of the traditional Christmas concerts in the Leipzig Gewandhaus . Later he also took over the radio GDR youth choir. Both ensembles were recognized throughout Europe.

In 1958 he and his singers recorded the first theme song for the TV show Our Sandman . The members of the choirs led by Sandig included u. a. Tom Pauls , Else Buschheuer and Norbert Bischoff .

In 1949 the MDR pioneer choir began to emerge with its director Gerd Schlotter, initially under the name of the Junge Funkgruppe. All new pioneer songs of the Eastern Bloc were broadcast for the first time by the Leipzig broadcaster in the GDR. In 1951, now under the name of the Pionierchor des Mitteldeutscher Rundfunk Sender Leipzig, it took part in the III. World Festival of Youth and Students in Berlin. Together with the youth choir of the MDR, the scenic choral work Herrnburg report was premiered by Brecht / Dessau under the overall direction of Hans Sandig.

Sandig also set numerous children's poems by various writers to music, including Kleine Meise (Alfred Kalcher), Sputnik, take me with you (Fritz Beckert), Still aus dem Walde (Johanna Kraeger), It snows, it snows - winter joys ( Wolfgang Brandenstein ), In the garden in front of the house (Kate Rudo).
