Pirates of the Burning Sea ( PotBS for short ) is a massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) developed and operated by Flying Lab Software . The game takes place in the Caribbean in 1720 and combines tactical sea and land battles with a player-controlled economy .

development

Pirates of the Burning Sea has been in development since 2002. In the first years of development, Flying Lab Software realized that the project required more development effort than expected. So they doubled the staff and hired another project, the MMORPG Delta Green .

On December 3, 2007, Flying Lab Software removed the NDA and began the Open Beta phase. The game was officially launched on January 22, 2008 (USA), with pre-orders starting on January 7, 2008.

Gameplay

Characters

Players in Pirates of the Burning Sea can create one or more characters to represent themselves in the game world. All characters are captains of their own ship and fight for a nation of their choice or as a pirate (see below). In the course of the game, the player increases his or her rank through experience gained, in other MMORPGs also known as level. This makes it possible for the player to receive new game content such as talents or combat skills or even better ships. The highest rank is limited to 50, which should be achieved after around two months of normal playing time.

After the character has been created, the player has to choose which nation he wants to belong to. The choice is limited to Great Britain, France, Spain or the pirates. The selection is unique and cannot be revoked. Each of the four nations has different starting ports and access to different resources at the beginning of the game.

Once a nation has been chosen, the player can change the appearance of his character. 14 different categories make it possible to create thousands of combinations. Many categories also allow color design. However, the appearance of the characters is also based on their rank. So it is only possible later to get wooden legs or hook prostheses, for example.

Careers

Before the game begins, the player must determine his character's career path. The career determines the skills and attributes of the captain. In every career, the game begins with a hand-to-hand combat technique ( fencing , foil, or dirty fighting); however, this can be changed at any time during the game. After each level rise, the avatar receives one skill point, alternately for close combat (for every even level) or sea combat (for uneven level). These can be invested in various skills, which in turn makes the captain more powerful or stronger. Like the nationality, the career path cannot be changed afterwards.

For naval combat, there are a total of 45 skills for each career, but only 25 can be chosen from. They are divided into nine categories with five skills each and must be chosen in ascending order. In order to choose the last skill in a category, you have to have already taken the four previous ones. In order to fully learn a branch, the player therefore needs rank 9.

Melee combat techniques have 40 skills in five categories, but the strong skills (from the fifth skill in the category) cost two, the strongest (the eighth skill in the category) even cost three skill points. In order to fully learn a branch, the player therefore needs rank 26.

Which careers you can choose depends on the nation you play for.

Careers are characterized as follows:

Navy Officer: Specializes in defense, escorting ships, and hand-to-hand combat. Navy officers gain access to powerful warships.

Privateer: (Eng .: privateer ) Specializes in the use of skillful tactics to outmaneuver the opponent and immobilize them. Mercenaries are skilled in boarding combat and have the opportunity to use pirate PvP zones.

Freetrader: (German: free trader) Specialized in trade, production and economy. Free traders have skills to effectively avoid or escape combat. It is possible to learn skills that will increase the speed of production.

Cutthroat: A versatile class that also allows boarded ships to be taken over. If a pirate boards a combat ship of a certain size, he will be automatically marked for open PvP combat.

Bucaneer: (German: Bukanier ) Specialized in the care of his pirate colleagues. He cannot hijack ships like the pirate. He is also allowed to drive larger ships, which can be equated with ships of the line.

Players who have chosen England, Spain or France as their nation can only play as a naval officer, privateer or free trader. Pirate nation players have the choice between cutthroat and buccaneer .
