Edward Alexander Powell

Edward Alexander Powell (born August 16, 1879 in Syracuse , New York , † November 13, 1957 in Falls Village , Connecticut ) was an American war correspondent and writer . He published almost exclusively under the name E. Alexander Powell .

Life

Edward Alexander Powell wrote from 1898 to 1899 for the Syracuse Journal , a Syracuse evening newspaper. In 1902 he became editor of The Craftsman magazine , which promoted the American Arts and Crafts Movement . From 1903 to 1904, he worked in London as advertising manager for the Smith Premier Typewriter Company . From 1905 to 1906 he worked in the Middle East as a correspondent for British and American publications. From 1906 to 1909 Powell was the official consul in Syria and Egypt.

Powell worked as a war correspondent during the First World War . The neutral status of the United States allowed him access to both sides of the battle lines from 1914. When they entered the war in 1917, Powell was called up as a captain in the military intelligence service. He was wounded in September 1918 and was unable to return to duty until the armistice in the same year; he then returned to the United States. He left the US military with the rank of major. Powell published his war coverage in newspapers and magazines such as The War Illustrated , New York World, and the Daily Mail . His war books were published by Charles Scribner's Sons .

Powell then switched from journalism to a successful career as an adventure and travel writer. He traveled all over the world and published more than 20 books between 1920 and 1954.

Edward Alexander Powell married Jessie Northrup; later Florence Taylor.
