Edward Arthur Laing

Edward Arthur Laing (* 27. February 1942 in Belize City ; † 11. September 2001 ) was a from Belize derived lawyer . From 1996 to 2001 he was a judge at the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea .

Life

Laing studied law at the University of Cambridge and obtained an LL.M. Degree from Columbia University .

After his admission in Belize, Laing initially worked as a lawyer. From 1970 to 1975 he was a lecturer at the University of the West Indies before moving to the University of Notre Dame as a research assistant . From 1976 to 1981 Laing was formerly a professor at the University of Maryland and 1980-1985 at Howard University in Washington, DC He quit Liang in the foreign service of his country and was from 1985 to 1990 both his country's ambassador to the United States as also High Commissioner in Canada and Permanent Representative to the Organization of American States . After a stay at the New York Law School , Laing took on the role of permanent representative at the United Nations from 1993 until his election to the International Tribunal for the Sea in 1996 .

Laing was a member of the American Society for International Law and the International Law Association .
