Edward Bairstow

Sir Edward Cuthbert Bairstow (born August 22, 1874 in Huddersfield , West Yorkshire , † May 1, 1946 in York ) was an English organist , music teacher , composer , choir director and conductor .

Bairstow graduated from the University of Durham and received his bachelor's degree in music in 1894 and his PhD in 1901. He worked as an organist in Wigan from 1899 , in Leeds from 1906 and in York from 1913 to 1946. From 1929 he was also Professor of Music at Durham University . He mainly composed church music for the Anglican Church and sonatas . In 1932 he was ennobled.
