Edward Boatner

Edward Hammond Boatner (born November 13, 1898 in New Orleans , † June 16, 1981 in New York City ) was an American composer who created many popular concert arrangements by Spirituals .

Life

Boatner studied at Western University in Quindaro , Kansas and the Boston Conservatory, and received a Bachelor of Music from Chicago Music College (now the College of Performing Arts at Roosevelt University ). He also studied music privately. He began as a concert singer with the encouragement and support of Roland Hayes - who performed many of Boatner's works in his concert program - and the choir director Robert Nathaniel Dett . He also sang title roles with the National Negro Opera Company . For the National Baptist Convention he worked from 1925 to 1931 as music director. Boatner was a professor at Samuel Huston College (now Huston-Tillotson University ) and Wiley College in Marshall, Texas. He then moved to New York , ran a studio, and directed community and church choirs. This allowed him to focus more on composing.
