Edward Alan John George, Baron George , GBE , PC , DL , known as Eddie George (born September 11, 1938 in Carshalton, London Borough of Sutton , † April 18, 2009 in St Tudy , Cornwall ) was a British bank manager and politician .

life and career

Edward George was born to Alan and Olive George. He studied economics at the University of Cambridge . In 1962 he started working for the Bank of England, where he was governor from 1993 to 2003.

He was a member of the school board of his previous school, Dulwich College , between 1998 and 2008 and served as chair of the school board from 2003 to 2008. In 1999 he was admitted to the Privy Council .

George was raised to personal nobility in June 2000 as the Knight Grand Cross of the Order of Bath . In 2001 he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences . In June 2004 he was appointed Life peer as Baron George of St Tudy in the, County of Cornwall , was appointed. In the House of Lords , he sat as CROSSBENCHER .

He died of lung cancer on April 18, 2009 at the age of 70.

George was married to Vanessa Williams from 1962 until his death. They had three children, a son and two daughters.
