from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Henry Edward (Ed) Lowe (born July 10, 1920 in Saint Paul (Minnesota) , † October 4, 1995 in Sarasota ) was an American entrepreneur and is considered the inventor of modern cat litter .

Life

Lowe took part in World War II as a member of the US Navy after graduating from school. After his return he worked in his father's shop. According to tradition, he invented the modern cat litter in January 1947 when he gave a neighbor a sack of Fullers's Earth to replace the sand, sawdust or ash filling that was common at the time. Fuller's Earth usually consists of palygorskite ( attapulgite ) or bentonite . After the successful use, Lowe developed a marketable product, founded Edward Lowe Industries and marketed his litter under the brand name Kitty Litter . Other litter products were added later, including Tidy Cat . In 1990 he sold his company to a group of investors, which then operated under the name Golden Cat Corporation. Lowe died in 1995. After his death, the company was sold to Ralston Purina .
