Edward Morris was the fifth of Edward Morris and Catherine Fitzgerald's six children, both of whom were from Ireland . He attended St. Bonaventure College in St. John's, which offered one of the best education in the British colony of Newfoundland . Between 1878 and 1880 he studied law in high school at the College of Ottawa . He was admitted to the bar in 1884 and soon after founded a law firm in St. John's with his brother Francis J. Morris.

Morris was first elected to the Newfoundland Parliament (House of Assembly) in 1885. In total, he won ten times in the constituency of St. John's. In 1889 he joined William Whiteway's Liberal Cabinet . In the Liberal Party he was considered a high-ranking politician with great influence in St. John's. In 1897 Robert Bond took over the chairmanship of the Liberal Party and in 1900 the office of Prime Minister . Morris initially became attorney general in Bond's cabinet, but resigned in 1907 and founded his own party, the People's Party, in 1908, with which he won the election in 1909 and became prime minister. In 1913, Morris was named Knight Commander of the Order of St. Michael and St. George . He was also a member of the British Privy Council .

Under his leadership, Newfoundland supported the British motherland in World War I by sending ground troops. He represented the Dominion in the war cabinet and participated in the national conference in part (Imperial Conference) of the 1917th As the war progressed, its popularity declined. He was accused of mismanagement and poor crisis management.

After forming the first all-party government in 1917 , Morris retired to England in early 1918. There he was raised to the nobility as the first Baron Morris for his services in the war effort . Morris moved to London and took his seat in the House of Lords . He stayed in Britain for the rest of his life, only returning once to Newfoundland. In 1901 he married Isabel Langrishe LeGallais. With her he had a son. She died in 1934. Morris died a year later in 1935 at the age of 76 in London.
