Edward Okuń

Edward Okuń (* 1872 in Wólka Zerzeńska near Warsaw , † 1945 in Skierniewice ) was a Polish Art Nouveau painter , member of Masonic lodges .

He came from a noble family and was an orphan at an early age. He was raised by his grandparents.

He began 1890-1891 lessons in the drawing class of Wojciech Gerson in Warsaw . He then studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Cracow a . a. with Jan Matejko , in Munich with Anton Ažbe and in Paris . In 1897 he came to Hungary to study with Simon Hollósy . From 1898 to 1918 he lived in Rome , visiting Sorrento , Amalfi , Capri , Venice and Padua . In Rome he took part in the founding of the Masonic Lodge "Polonia".

In 1921 he moved to Warsaw . In 1925 he was appointed professor at the School of Fine Arts, from 1933–1934 its rector. He founded the Masonic Lodge "Copernicus" in Warsaw . He was also deputy chairman of the Society for the Promotion of Fine Arts in Warsaw.

During the Second World War he lived in Warsaw. After the Warsaw Uprising in 1944, he came to Skierniewice , where he was killed in an accident in January 1945 as a result of an accidental shooting.

Edward Okuń remained true to Art Nouveau all his life. He occupied himself with painting, book graphics, and also created frescoes on the facade of his house on Warsaw's Old Town Market . He designed covers for the Munich magazine “ Jugend ” and for the Warsaw magazine “Chimera”.
