Edward Shang (* 19th January 1965 in Saarbrücken ) is a German specialist for general surgery and visceral surgery and was the first German Ordinary Professor of Bariatric Surgery .

Life

After graduating from high school, Shang studied human medicine at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main from 1986 to 1992 and received his doctorate in 1995. For surgical and visceral surgical training, he worked at the Garmisch-Partenkirchen Clinic, the University of Hong Kong , the Friedrich Schiller University Jena and the University Hospital Mannheim and as a senior physician at the University Hospital Mannheim from 1998 to 2010. This was followed by his habilitation in 2006 and the extraordinary professorship in 2009. In August 2010, Shang accepted the position of the University of Leipzig for the first German full professorship for bariatric surgery.

After a case of fraud , Shang ended his activities in Leipzig on May 9, 2012 by mutual agreement. The starting point was the withdrawal of a publication in Surgery for Obesity and Related Diseases in which Shang claimed to have operated on 60 patients as part of a study. In fact, only 21 patients had been operated on during the period in question. He subsequently withdrew three more articles. In July 2012 his teaching license was revoked by the habilitation committee of the Medical Faculty Mannheim.

Until 2015 he worked as chief physician for general and visceral surgery in the private "Surgical Clinic Dr. Rinecker ”in Munich-Thalkirchen. There he was again criticized in connection with the treatment of foreign patients.
