Kyteman is the stage name of the Dutch musician Colin Benders (born December 5, 1986 in Utrecht ), who is particularly successful in the hip-hop genre in his home country . His debut album The Hermit Sessions , released in 2009, was composed and produced by him, and he also recorded all of the instruments himself. In order to be able to present this work on stage, he founded Kyteman's Hip-hop Orchestra as a project in 2009 , which was soon disbanded in favor of his production company Kytopia . In 2011 Kyteman put the orchestra together under the name The Kyteman Orchestra . It now consists of 18 musicians, rappers, opera singers and a choir.

Musical influences and career

At the age of three, Colin Benders received his first trumpet, a gift from his uncle Jacky Terrasson , who became known as a jazz pianist. Terrasson took his nephew to the North Sea Jazz Festival , which would have an impact on Kyteman's career. At an early age, Benders moved from a normal primary school to the Koorschool Cathedral in Utrecht, where half of the lessons are devoted to music and choir singing. There Benders learned to play classical trumpet, and jazz and classical singing also influenced his musical development. Then Benders went to the School voor Jong Talent in The Hague , which is part of the local conservatory . Classical music was also taught there, but also music theory. At the time, Benders, barely twelve years old, began to participate in the Utrecht formation Six of Your Best Friends . He found that he was interested in styles other than classical and jazz.

At the age of 16, Benders was hired by Pete Philly as a trumpeter and performed with him at the Grote Prijs van Nederland in Amsterdam in 2002 , where Philly won the prize for best musician in the hip-hop genre. He then joined the hip-hop band Relax from Haarlem . Benders left school without a degree: According to his own statement, he wondered whether all subjects were important for his music and why he should deal with them if they weren't the case.

While still at Relax , Benders began preparations for his first album, The Hermit Sessions , for which he needed a total of two years. The painful experiences with a failed relationship that Benders dealt with in this way had a major influence. He previously released three tracks as an EP ( The Kyteman EP , 2008). His debut album made it to the top five of the Dutch charts in 2009, went platinum and stayed in the Netherlands' album charts for two years. Together with the Dutch jazz trumpeter Eric Vloeimans , Benders released another album in 2011, this time under the project name Kytecrash on his own label Kytopia .

From Kyteman's Hip-hop Orchestra to The Kyteman Orchestra

On his debut album, Colin Benders played all the instruments himself. At first he didn't even think about going on stage with The Hermit Sessions , as the implementation seemed too difficult and too expensive. But then the challenge attracted him: 15 orchestral musicians and a few rappers, who also played on the album, were specially put together for the live performances. At various festivals he and Kyteman's Hip-hop Orchestra sparked great enthusiasm and won the Popprijs 2009 at the Noorderslag Festival in Groningen . Despite the success, Benders decided against further appearances and disbanded the orchestra so that the next thing to do was to set up his own studio.

But at the end of 2010, Benders began working again with the former members of the orchestra, which he expanded to include a few musicians, opera singers, four rappers and a choir. After the reunion of the ensemble, now renamed The Kyteman Orchestra , the album of the same name was released in the Netherlands in March 2012, from which the title The Mushroom Cloud was also released as a single for Germany. This album was composed by Benders in Iceland and recorded there in analog form . According to Benders, it is a "journey back in time thirty years", in which this time mainly classical-oriented music includes elements of hip-hop, jazz, drum & bass and electro-pop. Ulrike Reichel wrote in the tip that the album sounded “like Tom Waits setting a lost musical by Pink Floyd to music .
